Giants, Eagles Share Top Slot In RealGM's Team Rankings

Oct 29, 2014 7:54 AM

The scoreboard is where games are officially won and lost, but they are largely decided by the team that wins the battles of yards per pass, yards per carry, penalty yards lost, first downs, and turnovers. For this reason, RealGM executive editor Christopher Reina created the following formula called the ?Trench Counter? to look at which teams truly control the game: (2x Yards per pass) + (2x Yards per carry) + (.5 First downs) - (Penalty yards/10) - (2.5 Turnovers) - (Opposing Team's Trench Counter) Click here for more information on the Trench Counter For the 2008 season, our weekly team rankings will be based solely off this formula. 1. New York Giants: 9.4 The defending-champions stand alone with the NFL?s second-best record and have regained the lead spot. The Giants have topped this list in three of the last four weeks. 2. Philadelphia Eagles: 9.4 Even after their win against the Falcons, the Eagles still sit at the bottom of their division. The Dolphins, No. 6 on the list, are the only other last-place team in the top-fifteen. 3. Washington Redskins: 7.7 The Redskins hold the third spot and are also the third NFC East team on the list. After allowing the Lions to hang close for longer than expected, Washington hosts Pittsburgh in a primetime battle this Monday night. 4. Pittsburgh Steelers: 7.4 The Steelers, who held the top spot after Week 7, fall to fourth after losing to the Giants at Heinz Field on Sunday afternoon. 5. Tennessee Titans: 6.1 The Titans quieted a majority of their critics on Monday night with an impressive win over the Colts. Nearly midway through their season, they lead the AFC South by an astounding four games. 6. Miami Dolphins: 4.4 The Dolphins are one of only two teams, along with the Vikings, in the top-fifteen with a losing record. Miami can thank their Week 3 (26.6), Week 5 (15.3) and Week 8 (11.6) TC totals. 7. Carolina Panthers: 4.3 Carolina moved into first in the NFC South with a big win over the Cardinals and can now enjoy their bye-week before traveling to Oakland. 8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 4.0 The Buccaneers moved down after a listless four-point loss to the Cowboys, but they could sky-rocket up the rankings with the Chiefs coming up. 9. Minnesota Vikings: 3.3 The Vikings needed a week off after their debacle against the Bears in Week Seven. 10. Baltimore Ravens: 2.6 Baltimore?s dismantling of the Raiders allowed them to move up three spots. They?ll have a chance to continue surging against the hot-and-cold Browns on Sunday. 11. Atlanta Falcons: 2.4 Matt Ryan didn?t back down to his hometown Eagles in Philadelphia, but the Falcons lost and slid down five spots. 12. Dallas Cowboys: 2.1 The Cowboys stay put thanks to a tough, but impressive, win over the Buccaneers. Is Tony Romo that good, or could Brad Johnson be that bad in Wade Phillips? downfield offense? 13. Chicago Bears: 1.7 The Bears actually moved up two spots on their bye-week. What more can you ask for? 14. New England Patriots: 1.4 Bill Belichick has figured out a way to win even when Matt Cassel struggles. That?s bad news for the rest of the AFC. 15. Buffalo Bills: 1.3 Buffalo looked bad against Miami, and will have no relief with the rival Jets on the docket. This isn?t a time for the Bills to stumble; the Patriots have rallied to tie for the AFC East lead. 16. Houston Texans: 0.6 The Texans feasted on the Bengals and have quietly won three-consecutive games. They?ll face the Vikings on Sunday, a matchup much tougher than Cincinnati. 17. Arizona Cardinals: 0.6 The Cardinals lost a tough one to the Panthers, but still have a two-game lead in the dreadful NFC West. 18. San Diego Chargers: 0.5 Philip Rivers still leads the NFL in quarterback rating, 107.8, but the San Diego defense simply can?t stop anyone. They are allowing nearly 25 points per game. 19. New York Jets: 0.5 The Jets were lucky to have escaped their game against the Chiefs will a win on Sunday. Brett Favre needs to make better decisions if this team is going to challenge for a playoff spot. 20. Green Bay Packers: 0.0 After some rest, the Packers will travel to Tennessee. 21. New Orleans Saints: -0.2 The Saints needed a victory in London badly, and got it in a shootout with the Chargers. Drew Brees (2,563) has almost 500 more yards than any other quarterback in the league. 22. Denver Broncos: -2.4 After their bye-week, the Broncos will host the surging Dolphins. We?ll have to see which Denver team shows up. 23. San Francisco 49ers: -2.6 Mike Singletary has brought his no-nonsense approach to the 49ers in just one short week. Can Shaun Hill help resurrect the team?s struggling offense? 24. Indianapolis Colts: -2.8 Peyton Manning?s sub par season continues. He threw a pair of interceptions against the Titans, one coming in the fourth quarter as he looked to drive the Colts down field and get back into the game. 25. Jacksonville Jaguars: -3.2 After a tough loss, the Jaguars have the horrid Bengals on the schedule. If Cincinnati?s porous defense and abysmal offense don?t cure Jacksonville, nothing will. 26. Cleveland Browns: -4.1 Cleveland?s win against the Jaguars in Jacksonville could help turn their season around, but they?ll have to knock off the Ravens this weekend to reach .500 and move up in these rankings. 27. Seattle Seahawks: -6.8 Seneca Wallace turned in a strong performance for the Seahawks against the struggling 49ers. Was it a sign of things to come in Seattle, or has San Francisco become that bad? 28. Oakland Raiders: -8.4 Oakland remains exactly where they were one week ago despite a demoralizing 29-10 loss to the Ravens in Baltimore. 29. Kansas City Chiefs: -9.1 Tyler Thigpen had his best start in Week Eight as the Chiefs almost upset the Jets. Their -0.3 TC was their second-best best of the year. 30. St. Louis Rams: -9.7 The Rams were close to beating the Patriots this weekend, but all they came away with was a -7 TC in a seven-point loss. 31. Detroit Lions: -10.5 Detroit was just a fraction of a point away from remaining last in back-to-back weeks. They?ll battle the Bears, who they posted their third-best TC of the season against (-8.8) in Week Five, at Solider Field on Sunday. 32. Cincinnati Bengals: -10.6 The Bengals move into the basement after the Rams and Lions took turns occupying it in recent weeks. They play the Jaguars this weekend with the chance to either slide up or pad their ?lead?.

Titans Move To 7-0

Jun 28, 2014 6:19 AM

Chances are you saw a majority of the thirteen games played on Sunday in the NFL?s Week Eight, but there is no need to worry if you weren?t watching all the action. RealGM is here to help summarize all that went down as NFL teams took the field in the final full weekend of October. We will also calculate each team?s Trench Counter*. Philadelphia 27, Atlanta 14 Team Trench Counter: Eagles +13.6, Falcons -13.6 The Philadelphia Eagles (4-3) allowed the Atlanta Falcons (4-3) to take a 7-0 lead but rallied to win relatively easily at Lincoln Financial Field. Donovan McNabb went 19-for-34 with 253 passing yards and had 25 rushing yards and a touchdown, his first since 2006, in the victory. Brian Westbrook, who was returning from a pair of fractured ribs, starred for the Eagles. He had 209 total yards (167 rushing and 42 receiving) and two rushing touchdowns against Atlanta. Rookie Matt Ryan, who is a native of the Philadelphia area, went 23-for-33 with 277 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Roddy White continues to be Ryan?s favorite target; he caught eight passes for 113 yards and two scores in the loss. Michael Turner had some troubles against the Eagles? rush defense, tallying just 58 yards on seventeen carries (including a 22-yard run). N.Y. Jets 28, Kansas City 24 Team Trench Counter: Jets +0.3, Chiefs -0.3 Brett Favre tossed a ton of interceptions, but the New York Jets (4-3) were still able to down the struggling Kansas City Chiefs (1-6) on Sunday. Favre went 28-for-40 with 290 yards, two touchdowns, and the three aforementioned picks. Laveranues Coles (7 catches, 64 yards) and Leon Washington (3 catches, 34 yards) were the beneficiaries of Favre?s touchdown strikes. Washington and Thomas Jones combined to rush for 121 yards and two scores in the win while New York?s defense sacked Tyler Thigpen four times. Thigpen played well for Kansas City, going 25-for-35 with 280 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith combined to tally 60 rushing yards on sixteen carries in the absence of the suspended Larry Johnson. Dwayne Bowe caught six passes for 102 yards while Tony Gonzalez and Mark Bradley connected with Thigpen in the end zone. Chiefs' rookie cornerback Brandon Flowers intercepted Favre twice, the first takeaways of his career. New Orleans 37, San Diego 32 Team Trench Counter: Saints +5.4, Chargers -5.4 The New Orleans Saints (4-4) defeated the San Diego Chargers (3-5) on Sunday at London?s Wembley Stadium. Drew Brees went 30-for-41 with 339 yards and three touchdowns in the victory, as the Saints won without Reggie Bush. Deuce McAllister had 55 rushing yards and a touchdown on eighteen attempts while Pierre Thomas added 28 yards in the win. Brees ran into his own end zone for a safety with less than ten seconds left on the clock in a strategic move by coach Sean Payton that paid off. Philip Rivers was nearly as good as Brees, but an interception ended up costing the Chargers. Rivers went 25-for-40 with 341 yards, three touchdowns, and the turnover. LaDainian Tomlinson, who said during the week that San Diego needed to run more, rushed for 105 yards on nineteen carries in the loss. He also caught five passes for 65 yards and a score while Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson also had receiving touchdowns overseas. New England 23, St. Louis 16 Team Trench Counter: Patriots +7, Rams -7 Matt Cassel struggled, but the New England Patriots (5-2) still knocked off the St. Louis Rams (2-5) at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. Cassel went 21-for-33 with 267 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the victory while Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis combined to rush for 76 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Randy Moss, who appears to finally be gelling well with Cassel, caught seven passes for 102 yards. New England's defense was able to break through and sack Marc Bulger four times. Bulger went 18-for-34 with 301 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. Without Steven Jackson, who sat out with a thigh injury, Antonio Pittman ran for 83 yards on nineteen carries. Rookie receiver Donnie Avery had a career day, catching six passes for 163 yards and scoring in the loss. The loss ended a two-game win streak for the Rams, who began the season with four-straight losses. Miami 25, Buffalo 16 Team Trench Counter: Dolphins +11.6, Bills -11.6 The Miami Dolphins (3-4) notched a key win over a divisional rival on Sunday after downing the Buffalo Bills (5-2) in South Beach. Chad Pennington went 22-for-30 with 314 yards and a touchdown while Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams combined for 59 rushing yards and a score in the victory. Ted Ginn Jr. enjoyed a spectacular afternoon, catching seven passes for 175 yards against the stifling Buffalo secondary. Trent Edwards went 21-for-35 with 227 yards and an interception since a majority of the Bills' offense came on the ground. Marshawn Lynch had 61 yards and a touchdown, and Fred Jackson added another 41 yards in the loss. Lee Evans had another big day, catching seven passes for 116 yards, but he wasn?t able to find the end zone. The Bills lost three fumbles, stalling drives on multiple occasions. With the loss, the Bills are now tied with the Patriots for first-place in the AFC East. Washington 25, Detroit 17 Team Trench Counter: Redskins +10.4, Lions -10.4 The Washington Redskins (6-2) defeated the Detroit Lions (0-7) in a surprisingly close battle at Ford Field on Sunday. Jason Campbell went 23-for-28 with 328 yards and a touchdown while Clinton Portis rushed for 126 yards on twenty-four carries. Shaun Alexander, who made his Redskins' debut on Week Seven against Cleveland, had just 11 yards on six carries. Santana Moss caught nine passes for 140 yards and a score and also ran a punt back 80 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Dan Orlovsky, making his third-straight start for the winless Lions, went 21-for-35 with 223 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Rudi Johnson and Kevin Smith had just 33 yards and a touchdown between them while Orlovsky added 17 yards on a pair of carries himself. Shaun McDonald caught five passes for 68 yards while Calvin Johnson grabbed four balls for 57 yards and a touchdown. Johnson has now caught four touchdowns in his last five games. Dallas 13, Tampa Bay 9 Team Trench Counter: Cowboys +2.4, Buccaneers -2.4 The Dallas Cowboys (5-3) got back on track Sunday against the Tampa Buccaneers (5-3) in a very hard fought game. Brad Johnson went 19-for-33 with 122 yards and a touchdown in the win while Marion Barber carried the ball twenty-five times for 71 yards. Terrell Owens led the Cowboys in receiving with five catches for 33 yards. After Johnson threw three interceptions in Week Seven?s loss to the Rams, Wade Phillips limited him to immediate throws against Tampa Bay. Jeff Garcia went 27-for-43 with 227 yards in the loss, failing to throw a touchdown after a huge game against the Seahawks last Sunday night. The Dallas defense limited Earnest Graham, who rushed seventeen times, for just 42 yards. Running back Clifton Smith caught just one pass for 13 yards and lost a fumble, the only turnover of the game. Carolina 27, Arizona 23 Team Trench Counter: Panthers +7.3, Cardinals -7.3 The Carolina Panthers (6-2) outlasted the Arizona Cardinals (4-3) at Bank of American Stadium this weekend. Jake Delhomme went 20-for-28 with 248 yards and two touchdowns in the win while DeAngelo Williams exploded for 108 rushing yards and a score, as well. Jonathan Stewart had just 10 yards on eight carries against Arizona. Steve Smith was the beneficiary of both of Delhomme?s touchdown strikes as he caught five passes for 117 yards to move the Panthers into first place in the NFC South. Kurt Warner aired it out once again, going 35-for-49 with 381 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Edgerrin James, who complained this week about his lack of touches, ran for 17 yards on seven carries and lost a fumble in the defeat. Larry Fitzgerald caught seven passes from Warner for 115 yards, and Anquan Boldin, who returned for the first time since fracturing his sinus in Week Four against the Jets, grabbed nine balls for 63 yards and two trips to the end zone. Baltimore 29, Oakland 10 Team Trench Counter: Ravens +6.4, Raiders -6.4 The Baltimore Ravens (4-3) jumped out to a 19-0 lead against the Oakland Raiders (2-5) on Sunday and never looked back. Rookie Joe Flacco went 12-for-24 with 140 yards and a touchdown, a 70-yard strike to Demetrius Williams in the second quarter. Flacco also ran in a 12-yard score in the fourth that put the game away for good. Ray Rice, Willis McGahee, and Le?Ron McClain helped Baltimore dominate on the ground, rushing for 154 yards and scoring a touchdown against Oakland?s defense. JaMarcus Russell was 15-for-33 with 228 yards, a touchdown, and an interception for the Raiders. Without Darren McFadden, Oakland struggled on the ground. Justin Fargas and Michael Bush combined to run for just 32 yards on seventeen carries in the loss. Rookie receiver Chaz Schilens had the best game of his young career against the Ravens, catching three passes for 76 yards. Russell was sacked four times while Flacco went untouched. Houston 35, Cincinnati 6 Team Trench Counter: Texans +18.4, Bengals -18.4 The Cincinnati Bengals (0-8) remain winless after getting beaten soundly by the Houston Texans (3-4) at Reliant Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Matt Schaub went 24-for-28 with 280 yards and three touchdowns while rookie Steve Slaton had 53 yards and a touchdown on fifteen carries in the victory. Schaub hooked up with Kevin Walter (five catches for 70 yards) twice and David Anderson (two catches for 28 yards) once in the end zone while connecting with Andre Johnson on eleven occasions for 143 yards. Jacoby Jones got the Texans on the board with a 73-yard punt return early in the first quarter. Ryan Fitzpatrick struggled once again, going 20-for-32 with 155 yards and a pair of interceptions in the team?s eighth-straight loss. Cedric Benson had 49 rushing yards, while Fitzpatrick added 42 yards on seven carries himself. T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad ?Ocho Cinco? Johnson combined for thirteen receptions and 98 receiving yards, but couldn?t reach the end zone against Houston. In addition to his two interceptions, Fitzpatrick also lost a fumble as he accounted for all of Cincinnati?s turnovers. Cleveland 23, Jacksonville 17 Team Trench Counter: Browns +5.4, Jaguars -5.4 The Cleveland Browns (3-4) are just one win away from .500 after holding off the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-4) in Florida on Sunday afternoon. Derek Anderson went 14-for-27 with 246 yards and a touchdown while Jamal Lewis had one of his best games of the season with 81 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Braylon Edwards caught two passes for 64 yards while tight end Steven Heiden, who was filling in for Kellen Winslow, led the team with three receptions for 73 yards. Donte Stallworth, who had three catches for just 13 yards, was the recipient of Anderson?s only touchdown pass. David Garrard, who had a very Garrard-like stat line, went 25-for-42 with 283 yards and two touchdowns in the close loss. Garrard added 59 rushing yards on seven carries while Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor had just 53 yards between them. Matt Jones led Jacksonville with eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown, including a 35-yard reception that kept the Jaguars? hopes alive in the final seconds. Seattle 34, San Francisco 13 Team Trench Counter: Seahawks +4.7, 49ers -4.7 Seneca Wallace improved mightily over his performance against the Buccaneers last Sunday as he led the Seattle Seahawks (2-5) to an emphatic win over the San Francisco 49ers (2-6) at Candlestick Park. Wallace went 15-for-25 with 222 yards and two touchdowns, both connections with fullback Leonard Weaver, who had four catches for 116 yards. Maurice Morris and Weaver had problems on the ground, combining for 29 yards on thirteen carries, but Seahawks got all they needed on offense. J.T. O?Sullivan went 13-for-21 with 131 yards and an interception and was benched by new coach Mike Singletary after his eleventh fumble of the season. Shaun Hill replaced O?Sullivan and went 15-for-23 with 173 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Hill also rushed for twenty yards on two carries while Frank Gore added 94 yards on the ground and 65 receiving yards in the team?s fifth-straight loss. Seattle managed to record five sacks en route to their first win in four tries. N.Y. Giants 21, Pittsburgh 14 Team Trench Counter: Giants +7.8, Steelers -7.8 The New York Giants (6-1) scored twelve points in the fourth quarter on their way to a comeback win over the Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) at Heinz Field. Eli Manning went 19-for-32 with 199 yards and a touchdown, while Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward had 84 rushing yards on thirty-one carries in the difficult win. Kevin Boss, who had four catches for 34 yards, was the recipient of Manning?s only scoring pass. Plaxico Burress, who was held out of the starting lineup after missing a treatment for his injured neck on Saturday, had just three catches for 15 yards. Ben Roethlisberger had his worst game of the season, going 13-for-29 with 189 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions against New York?s ball-hawking defense. The Steelers were without Santonio Holmes, who was deactivated for the game after being arrested for drug possession last week. Mewelde Moore continued his hot streak in relief of the injured Willie Parker, running for 84 yards and a touchdown. Nate Washington caught just one pass, a 65-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter. Rookie Limas Sweed caught three balls for 28 yards in just his second appearance. Tennessee 31, Indianapolis 21 Team Trench Counter: Titans +3.1, Colts -3.1 The Tennessee Titans (7-0) remained unbeaten on Monday night after an impressive win over the rival Indianapolis Colts (3-4). Kerry Collins was more than good enough, going 24-for-37 with 193 yards, while Chris Johnson and LenDale White took care of business on the ground. Johnson had 77 yards and a touchdown and White added two scores and thirteen yards in the victory. Tennessee's defense also pestered Peyton Manning, forcing two interceptions. Manning went 26-for-41 with 223 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss. Dominic Rhodes had 70 yards on seventeen carries, and Chad Simpson added 23 yards on four carries in the absence of Joseph Addai. Dallas Clark broke out, catching seven passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns, but the Colts struggled in key situations and couldn't stop the Titans' attack in the second half. Indianapolis led 14-6 midway through the third, but Tennessee rallied to score 25-straight points en route to victory. *Explaining The Trench Counter

Nittany Lions Top Buckeyes, Remain Unbeaten

Jun 25, 2014 10:59 PM

Evan Royster rushed nineteen times for 77 yards in the win, while Daryll Clark went 12-for-20 with 120 passing yards. Fullback Dan Lawlor scored the only touchdown of the game, a 1-yard run midway through the fourth. Terrelle Pryor went 16-for-28 with 228 passing yards and an interception, which he threw with less than a minute remaining in the game. No. 1 Texas knocked off No. 6 Oklahoma State, while No. 2 Alabama took care of Tennessee.

Steelers Top RealGM's Team Rankings

Sep 29, 2014 5:46 AM

The scoreboard is where games are officially won and lost, but they are largely decided by the team that wins the battles of yards per pass, yards per carry, penalty yards lost, first downs, and turnovers. For this reason, RealGM executive editor Christopher Reina created the following formula called the ?Trench Counter? to look at which team truly controls the game: (2x Yards per pass) + (2x Yards per carry) + (.5 First downs) - (Penalty yards/10) - (2.5 Turnovers) - (Opposing Team's Trench Counter) Click here for more information on the Trench Counter For the 2008 season, our weekly team rankings will be based solely off this formula. 1. Pittsburgh Steelers: 10.0 An absolute drubbing of the lowly Bengals on Sunday allowed the Steelers to leapfrog the Giants and idle Eagles to take over the top spot. 2. New York Giants: 9.7 At times the Giants looked flustered against the 49ers, and even though they still won soundly, it wasn?t enough to hold off the surging Steelers. 3. Philadelphia Eagles: 8.8 The Eagles dropped a spot as they sat at home and watched the action from home. A win over the Falcons this weekend could launch them into the top spot with Pittsburgh and New York facing off. 4. Washington Redskins: 7.3 For the second-straight week there are three NFC East teams in the top four. Washington?s win over Cleveland wasn?t pretty (14-11), but they got the job done and continue to impress. 5. Tennessee Titans: 6.7 The undefeated Titans have entered the top-five, but their yards per completion average of 6.28 is among the league?s worst. Kerry Collins manages a great game for Jeff Fisher, but they?ll eventually need more out of his arm. 6. Atlanta Falcons: 5.0 If the Falcons want to move up in the rankings next week they?ll have to beat the Eagles in Philadelphia and continue dominating on the ground. 7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 4.9 The Bucs are the sixth-straight NFC team in this week?s rankings thanks to their dominant, but ugly, win over the Seahawks on Sunday night. Their +4 takeaway differential has been the key to their success. 8. Carolina Panthers: 3.9 The Panthers moved up four spots, thanks to their impressive victory over the division rival Saints. Carolina dominated on the ground, and Jake Delhomme had one of his best passing games of the season. 9. Buffalo Bills: 3.5 The Bills, just the second AFC team in the top-ten, cut down the high-powered Chargers in Buffalo this past weekend. They collected a number of turnovers, three by Philip Rivers, and moved up six spots because of it. 10. Minnesota Vikings: 3.3 Both the Vikings and Bears should be embarrassed after their 48-41 shootout. Neither team played well, but Minnesota probably would have won (despite Gus Frerotte?s four picks) if they hadn?t messed up on special teams. 11. Miami Dolphins: 3.2 The wildcat formation is no longer a secret in Miami, and with Buffalo on the schedule this weekend, the Dolphins could slide down further. 12. Dallas Cowboys: 2.1 The Cowboys dropped five spots and saw their average trench counter fall from 4.8 to 2.1, thanks to a listless performance against the Rams. With Tony Romo on the sideline they can still win games, but will their statistics suffer? 13. Baltimore Ravens: 1.9 Joe Flacco will need to cut down on the interceptions if the Ravens are going to challenge in the AFC North. 14. Arizona Cardinals: 1.9 The idle Cardinals sit exactly where they did after Week 6, but in order to improve heading into the season?s midpoint, they?ll need to play extremely well against the tough Panthers. 15. Chicago Bears: 1.7 I already mentioned that horrific Chicago/Minnesota game, so I?ll focus on what the Bears need to do in order to move up this list. Getting more than 3.6 yards per carry would be a start? 16. San Diego Chargers: 1.4 The Chargers came unglued in Buffalo posting their second negative TC in three weeks. If Rivers is more careful with the football, they should see the top-ten in a few weeks. 17. New York Jets: 0.5 The honeymoon is over for Brett Favre and the Jets. The quarterback has one touchdown and four interceptions in the team?s last two games. 18. New England Patriots: 0.4 A little Monday night magic launched the Patriots from -4.2 to 0.4 in just a week?s time. Matt Cassel won?t have another game like the one he did against the Broncos, but Bill Belichick now knows what his quarterback can handle. 19. Green Bay Packers: 0.0 Seven weeks into the season and the Packers have absolutely nothing to show for it. Actually, that?s far from the truth. They are just a very average football team right now. 20. New Orleans Saints: -1.0 The Saints will struggle on offense without Reggie Bush, but they should be able to get out of the red if Drew Brees rekindles his relationship with Marques Colston down field. 21. San Francisco 49ers: -2.3 Mike Singletary says that this team has something special, but can the new coach unearth their supposed excellence? 22. Houston Texans: -2.4 The Texans narrowly held off the Lions after jumping out to a huge lead on Sunday. Look for another early lead with the winless Bengals are coming to town in Week Eight. 23. Denver Broncos: -2.4 The Broncos have dropped six spots, thanks to their performance in New England. A loss is one thing, but the injured finger of Jay Cutler could be another. 24. Jacksonville Jaguars: -2.8 Who would have thought that the Jaguars would be in the bottom half of the league in yards per carry? 25. Indianapolis Colts: -2.8 Things are about as bad in Indianapolis as they ever have been since Peyton Manning arrived in town. Their horrid run game, compounded by a weak offensive line, will need to improve ? fast. 26. Cleveland Browns: -5.6 I hate to say it just six games into the season, but the Browns are officially the league?s biggest bust. They are horrible in most facets of the game, but Derek Anderson?s 62.9 quarterback rating is the most glaring disappointment. 27. Seattle Seahawks: -8.7 To be completely honest, I?m very surprised that the Seahawks have an average trench counter as high as -8.7. They look, to steal words from Mike Holmgren, like a high school football team. 28. Oakland Raiders: -8.8 Tom Cable got the Raiders a win on Sunday, and JaMarcus Russell looks ready to handle more of the offense. If Cable trusts his quarterback, Oakland?s below-average passing attack could thrive. 29. Cincinnati Bengals: -9.5 The Bengals are absolutely horrific on offense right now, but more carries for Cedric Benson could keep Marvin Lewis in town a little longer. 30. St. Louis Rams: -10.1 Back-to-back wins over NFC East opponents have lifted the Rams out of last place and up a few rungs on the basement steps. If the Patriots remain hot, St. Louis could be back at the bottom next week. 31. Kansas City Chiefs: -10.5 Herm Edwards? quarterbacks have a 58.6 combined QB rating and are averaging just 5.10 yards per pass. 32. Detroit Lions: -10.6 The Lions have played better in the last two weeks, but their early-season struggles are still plaguing their trench counter ranking.

RealGM Rundown: Dallas Lost Without Romo?

Aug 2, 2014 4:20 AM

Chances are you saw a majority of the thirteen games played on Sunday in the NFL?s Week Seven, but there is no need to worry if you weren?t watching all the action. RealGM is here to help summarize all that went down as NFL teams took the field in the third weekend of October. We will also calculate each team?s Trench Counter*. St. Louis 34, Dallas 14 Team Trench Counter: Rams +14.3, Cowboys -14.3 The St. Louis Rams (2-4) earned their second-straight win of the season against an NFC East opponent with an emphatic victory over the Dallas Cowboys (4-3) on Sunday. Marc Bulger went 14-for-19 with 173 yards and a touchdown while Steven Jackson starred on offense with 160 rushing yards and three trips to the end zone. The St. Louis defense recorded three sacks and forced four turnovers at the Edward Jones Dome. Brad Johnson, making his first start in place of the injured Tony Romo, was just 17-for-34 with 234 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Marion Barber rushed well, tallying 100 yards and a score, but Johnson?s miscues doomed the Cowboys? offense. Barber, who lost a fumble, was responsible for the team?s fourth turnover. Tight end Martellus Bennett, who was only on the field for a handful of plays at the end of the game, led Dallas with two catches, 67 yards, and a touchdown. N.Y. Giants 29, San Francisco 17 Team Trench Counter: Giants +12.3, 49ers -12.3 The New York Giants (5-1) used a strong second half to distance themselves from the San Francisco 49ers (2-5) in East Rutherford on Sunday. Brandon Jacobs led the Giants? offense with 69 rushing yards and two touchdowns while Eli Manning went 16-for-31 with 161 yards and a touchdown. A number of 49ers? turnovers gave New York good field position, which they capitalized on to take control of the game. J.T. O?Sullivan was sacked six times, going 16-for-28 with 256 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He also lost a fumble, stalling San Francisco?s offense on three occasions. The Giants also limited Frank Gore, holding him to 11 rushing yards on eleven attempts. Rookie wide receiver Josh Morgan was the lone offensive star for the 49ers, catching five passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Baltimore 27, Miami 13 Team Trench Counter: Ravens +0.6, Dolphins -0.6 Joe Flacco did just enough, and Willis McGahee broke out of his offensive funk to lead the Baltimore Ravens (3-3) past the Miami Dolphins (2-4) in South Beach. Flacco went 17-for-23 with 232 yards and a touchdown while McGahee tallied 105 yards and a score in the victory. Derrick Mason, who has established himself as Flacco?s favorite target, caught six balls for 87 yards and a trip to the end zone, as well. The Baltimore defense also clamped down on Miami?s dynamic offense, limiting Ronnie Brown for the first time since the Wildcat formation emerged in Miami. Chad Pennington went 24-for-35 with 295 yards and a touchdown, but he made one mistake too many with an interception in the second quarter as the Dolphins were charging near midfield. Brown had just 27 rushing yards and was held without a touchdown. That ended a streak of four-straight weeks with a score and marked one of his lowest yardage totals of the season. Greg Camarillo had six receptions for 74 yards while David Martin grabbed four catches for 71 yards in defeat. Tennessee 34, Kansas City 10 Team Trench Counter: Titans +15.8, Chiefs -15.8 The Tennessee Titans (6-0) ran wild over the Kansas City Chiefs (1-5) on Sunday night en route to a punishing win at Arrowhead Stadium. Kerry Collins managed a terrific game, going 11-for-18 with 123 yards. Chris Johnson and LenDale White combined for tremendous production on the ground, tallying 317 yards and four touchdowns. White accounted for three of the scores, with Johnson running for 168 yards on eighteen carries. Tennessee sacked Kansas City quarterbacks ? they used three ? on a trio of occasions. Tyler Thigpen had Kansas City?s lone touchdown, which came on a 14-yard run late in the fourth quarter. Damon Huard, Thigpen, and Brodie Croyle combined to go 23-for-37 with 235 passing yards. Kolby Smith and Jamaal Charles were limited to 37 rushing yards on thirteen carries. Tony Gonzalez had 97 receiving yards, and Dwayne Bowe added 86 for the Chiefs, who missed a pair of field goals but didn?t turn the ball over. Pittsburgh 38, Cincinnati 10 Team Trench Counter: Steelers +19.7, Bengals -19.7 The Pittsburgh Steelers (5-1) dominated the Cincinnati Bengals (0-7) early and often at Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday. Ben Roethlisberger went 17-for-28 with 216 yards and two touchdowns, and Byron Leftwich came on late in the fourth to add 34 yards and score on 3-for-3 passing. Mewelde Moore rushed for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns on twenty carries in the absence of Willie Parker, who missed his third-straight game with knee trouble. Pittsburgh?s defense racked up seven sacks and forced two turnovers. Ryan Fitzpatrick went 21-for-35 with 164 yards and a touchdown, a 5-yard strike to Chad Johnson in the second quarter. Cedric Benson led the Bengals on the ground with 52 yards on fourteen carries, as the Cincinnati offense looked pathetic for a majority of the afternoon. The winless Bengals never led, didn?t record a single sack and didn?t have an answer for Pittsburgh?s offensive attack. Chicago 48, Minnesota 41 Team Trench Counter: Bears +4.7, Vikings -4.7 The Chicago Bears (4-3) win a surprising shootout over the Minnesota Vikings (3-4) on Sunday at Solider Field. Kyle Orton went 21-for-32 with 283 yards and two touchdowns, while the Chicago defense provided plenty of points against an often-confused Minnesota team. Matt Forte had 56 yards and a score, while Garrett Wolfe (17-yard touchdown after a blocked punt) and Zack Bowman (fumble recovery in the end zone) added fourteen points on defense/special teams. Adrian Peterson dominated on the ground, but several miscues by Gus Frerotte put the Vikings in too deep of a hole against the Bears. Frerotte went 25-for-40 with 298 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. One of those picks was a forced throw very late in the fourth quarter with Minnesota attempting to tie the score. Peterson had 121 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and Chester Taylor added 34 yards and a score of his own in the loss. Both teams recorded two sacks, but Chicago won the turnover battle. Carolina 30, New Orleans 7 Team Trench Counter: Panthers +9, Saints -9 Jake Delhomme outplayed Drew Brees on Sunday as the Carolina Panthers (5-2) easily knocked off the New Orleans Saints (3-4). Delhomme went 14-for-22 with 195 yards and two touchdowns while Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams combined to control the ground game. Stewart had 68 rushing yards and a touchdown, and Williams added 70 total yards and a touchdown reception in the win. Steve Smith, the team?s unquestioned top target, had 6 catches for 122 yards and a score. Brees went 21-for-39 with 231 yards and an interception. Reggie Bush ran for 55 yards on nine carries before leaving the game with a knee injury that will require surgery. Deuce McAllister rushed for 47 yards, and Devery Henderson caught three passes for 80 yards in defeat. Carolina took care of the ball well while New Orleans? two turnovers ended up being too many at Bank of America Stadium. Buffalo 23, San Diego 14 Team Trench Counter: Bills +13.6, Chargers -13.6 The Buffalo Bills (5-1) defeated the San Diego Chargers (3-4) on Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium thanks to a strong performance from their defense. Trent Edwards, who missed time in Week Five with a concussion, bounced back after a bye week to go 25-for-30 with 261 yards and a touchdown. Marshawn Lynch rushed for 70 yards and a score of his own, and Lee Evans led the team in receiving with eight receptions for 89 yards and trip to the end zone. Buffalo sacked Rivers twice, intercepted him once, and picked up a pair of fumbles by the San Diego quarterback. Rivers went 22-for-29 with 208 yards, two touchdowns, and the aforementioned interception. He ended strong San Diego drives with fumbles in the second and fourth quarters that ultimately kept the team from challenging late in the game. LaDainian Tomlinson continued to struggle, rushing for 41 yards on fourteen carries. Vincent Jackson, who had four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown, ran for 31 yards on a single carry in the loss. The Chargers? defense wasn?t able to bother Edwards or the Bill?s offense, and they didn?t force a single turnover. Houston 28, Detroit 21 Team Trench Counter: Texans +0.5, Lions -0.5 The Houston Texans (2-4) jumped out to an early lead against the Detroit Lions (0-6) on Sunday and held off a late charge to win their second straight game. Matt Schaub went 26-for-31 with 267 yards and two touchdowns, with both of the scores coming on connections with tight end Owen Daniels. Rookie Steve Slaton rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown while Ahman Green added 62 yards and a score on the ground, as well. Andre Johnson caught eleven passes for 141 yards in the win, and the defense sacked Detroit?s Dan Orlovsky twice. After falling behind 21-0, the Lions battled back to within a touchdown but simply ran out of time at the end of the fourth quarter. Orlovsky, making just his second career start, went 12-for-25 with 265 yards and a touchdown, and rookie running back Kevin Smith added 61 rushing yards and a score in the loss. Calvin Johnson caught two passes from Orlovsky for 154 yards and a trip to the end zone with former teammate Roy Williams now playing in Dallas. Washington 14, Cleveland 11 Team Trench Counter: Redskins +6.9, Browns -6.9 The Washington Redskins (5-2) won a game against the Cleveland Browns (2-4) that was scoreless heading into the third quarter. Jason Campbell went 14-for-23 with 164 yards and a touchdown while Clinton Portis rushed for 175 yards and a score in the victory. Santana Moss, who caught four passes for 75 yards, hooked up with Campbell on an 18-yard strike that gave Washington a 14-3 lead early in the fourth quarter. Derek Anderson was just 14-for-37 with 136 yards and a touchdown, which came on a 1-yard pass to Josh Cribbs with less than three minutes left in the game. Jamal Lewis had 80 yards on the ground but was outperformed by Portis in the loss. Braylon Edwards had 58 receiving yards while tight end Kellen Winslow, who spent a majority of last week in the hospital with an undisclosed illness, caught two passes for 17 yards in the loss. Oakland 16, N.Y. Jets 13 (OT) Team Trench Counter: Raiders 0, Jets 0 Sebastian Janikowski hit a 57-yard field goal (a team-record) with just 2:30 left in overtime to give the Oakland Raiders (2-4) their first win under head coach Tom Cable. JaMarcus Russell went 17-for-30 with 203 yards and a touchdown in the win over the New York Jets (3-3). Justin Fargas rushed for 74 yards, and rookie Darren McFadden added 39 yards in the victory. Javon Walker caught five passes for 75 yards and touchdown, his first with the team. Brett Favre struggled, going 21-for-38 with 197 yards and two interceptions, but Thomas Jones kept the Jets in the game with 159 rushing yards on 24 attempts in the loss. Trailing 13-10 near the end of regulation, Favre led New York down the field and into position for Jay Feely to hit a game-tying field goal that forced overtime. Feely hit the 52-yarder with three seconds left on the clock, after missing his first attempt, which wasn?t counted after the Raiders called a timeout. Green Bay 34, Indianapolis 14 Team Trench Counter: Packers +12.9, Colts -12.9 The Green Bay Packers? (4-3) defense came alive on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts (3-3) en route to a 20-point victory. Aaron Rodgers went 21-for-28 with 186 yards and a touchdown while Ryan Grant added 105 yards and a score on the ground in the win. No Green Bay receiver had more than 37 yards as Rodgers shared the ball nicely among eight different men. Nick Collins returned an interception 62 yards in the third quarter for a touchdown, and Aaron Rouse brought back a 99-yarder in the fourth to put the game away. Peyton Manning went 21-for-42 with 229 yards and two interceptions in the loss, as the Indianapolis offensive line continued to struggle. With Joseph Addai out because of a hamstring injury, Dominic Rhodes ran for 73 yards and two touchdowns in defeat. Dallas Clark had eight receptions for 81 yards while Anthony Gonzalez hauled in five balls for 72 yards. Ironically, both had touchdowns called back with less than two minutes left after booth reviews. Tampa Bay 20, Seattle 10 Team Trench Counter: Buccaneers +11, Seahawks -11 Jeff Garcia was red-hot for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-2) in their win over the Seattle Seahawks (1-5) on Sunday night. Garcia went 27-for-36 with 310 yards and a touchdown, as the Seattle defense spent a majority of the night on the field. Earnest Graham had 52 yards and a touchdown on the ground while Warrick Dunn added 37 in the win. Wide receiver Antonio Bryant caught six passes for 115 yards and a score, his second 100-yard game and his first touchdown of the season. Seneca Wallace, starting in place of the injured Matt Hasselbeck, looked confused for a majority of the game. He went 12-for-23 with 73 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. He also rushed for six yards on two attempts and lost a fumble. Considering Seattle's abysmal passing attack, Maurice Morris and Julius Jones did a decent job on the ground. They combined to rush for 96 yards in the loss. Rookie tight end John Carlson, the team's leading receiver on the season, was the recipient of Wallace's only touchdown pass. New England 41, Denver 7 Team Trench Counter: Patriots +23.7, Broncos -23.7 Jay Cutler appeared to injure his finger on the first play of the game, and the Denver Broncos (4-3) never got on track against the New England Patriots (4-2) in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Matt Cassel has his best game since taking over for Tom Brady in Week 1, going 18-for-24 with 185 yards and three touchdowns. The Patriots punished the Broncos on the ground as well, rushing for 257 yards in the win. Randy Moss also had his best performance of the season, catching five passes for 69 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Cutler struggled mightily, going 17-for-26 with 168 yards, one touchdowns and two interceptions. Whether it was because of his injured finger or New England's defense, it didn't matter in the end. Michael Pittman ran well, rushing for 88 yards on twenty carries, but two fumbles by backup Andre Hall doomed Denver's offense. The Broncos sacked Cassel six times, but he remained poised enough to led the Pats to victory. Brandon Marshall was Cutler's top target once again, grabbing six balls for 77 yards in the loss. *Explaining The Trench Counter

Chances are you saw a majority of the thirteen games played on Sunday in the NFL?s Week Six, but there is no need to worry if you weren?t taking in all of the action. RealGM is here to help summarize all that went down as NFL teams took the field in the second weekend of October. We will also showcase each game's top FIC* (field impact counter) performers using RealGM editor Chris Reina's innovative statistical system, and calculate each team?s Trench Counter**. St. Louis 19, Washington 17 Team Trench Counter: Rams -15.2, Redskins +15.2 The St. Louis Rams (1-4) won their first game of the season on Sunday in a thrilling battle against the Washington Redskins (4-2). Atogwe scored the only touchdown of the game for St. Louis, on a 75-yard fumble return in the second quarter. Marc Bulger went 15-for-26 with 136 yards in the win, while Steven Jackson had 79 yards on twenty-two carries against the Redskins. In addition to the punt return by Atogwe, the Rams sacked Jason Campbell three times and forced three fumbles. Garcia went 15-for-20 with 173 yards and a touchdown, while Warrick Dunn rushed for 115 yards against Carolina?s tough defense. Tampa Bay?s secondary bothered Jake Delhomme all afternoon long, intercepting him three times. Delhomme went 20-for-39 with 242 yards, throwing often as the Panthers trailed early. The Buccaneers got on the board early when Geno Hayes returned a blocked punt 22 yards for a touchdown just a few minutes into the game. Carolina wasn?t able to recover following the botched punt, with a field goal in the second quarter marking their only score. Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden combined for 65 rushing yards, as a field goal in the first quarter marked the Raiders' only points of the game. With just a few seconds left in the fourth quarter, Romo completed a pass to Jason Witten that went for 30 yards to Arizona?s 39-yard line. The Giants moved the ball well on offense, but were only able to reach the end zone twice because of Manning's miscues. Jamal Lewis rushed for 88 yards and a score for the Browns, while Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward combined for 168 yards and a touchdown for the Giants. Braylon Edwards had his best game of the season, catching five passes for 154 yards and a score in the win. *The NFL Reina Value **Explaining The Trench Counter

Giants Stand Atop RealGM's Team Rankings After Week 5

May 25, 2014 11:30 PM

The scoreboard is where games are officially won and lost, but they are largely decided by the team that wins the battles of yards per pass, yards per carry, penalty yards lost, first downs, and turnovers. For this reason, I created the following formula called the ?Trench Counter? to look at which team truly controls the game: (2x Yards per pass) + (2x Yards per carry) + (.5 First downs) - (Penalty yards/10) - (2.5 Turnovers) - (Opposing Team's Trench Counter) Click here for more information on the Trench Counter For the 2008 season, our weekly team rankings will be based solely off of this formula. 1. New York Giants: 13.2 The Giants have rushed for twice as many yards as they?ve given up (725 to 328), while piling up 15 sacks. Between Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka, Domenik Hixon and Sinorice Moss, the depth of the Giants has perhaps been the most impressive part of their 4-0 start. 2. Pittsburgh Steelers: 8.0 Sunday night was the first time since Week 12 in the 2006 season that Ben Roethlisberger threw at least 40 passes. The Steelers are now 2-3 when he throws the ball so frequently in his career. 3. Philadelphia Eagles: 7.0 The Eagles? record keeps making me look bad. If it wasn?t bad enough for the 2-2 Eagles to be ranked first last week, now they?re third with a 2-3 record. If you wipe away the Rams? game, they have a season Trench Counter average of 2.4, which puts them at 15 and sounds at least a little more fair than three although I still believe they?re better than a few more than half the NFL. 4. Baltimore Ravens: 6.5 The Ravens out-rushed and out-passed the Titans while also converting eight more first downs, but they allowed an 81-yard drive for a field goal early in the 4th and an 80-yard drive for a TD on the next possession to offset three separate three and outs for -4, 5 and 8. 5. Washington Redskins: 5.9 - Still no turnovers after five games? Check - No panic after being down 0-14 on the road at Philadelphia? Check - Get back into the game with three Shaun Suisham field goals in the second quarter, including one right before the half where Jason Campbell goes 50 yards in 53 seconds? Check - A win with 100+ yards rushing on the road for Portis against the NFC East? Two-for-three 6. Carolina Panthers: 5.8 After a couple impressive early performances from Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams has taken the reigns. He carried the ball 20 times for 123 yards (6.2 avg) and two TD's while catching one ball for a TD against the Chiefs. 7. Atlanta Falcons: 5.2 Matt Ryan has passer ratings of 137.0, 120.6 and 94.1 in Atlanta three wins, while in the losses he?s been down to 29.6 and 60.8. 8. Tennessee Titans: 4.8 After an excellent game at Cincinnati (98.9), Kerry Collins has been incredibly ordinary (72.0, 68.6 and 52.0). He?s been just good enough to allow a dominant Titans? defense to win games for him. Whether it?s Vince Young or Collins, the Tennessee defense just wins football games. 9. Dallas Cowboys: 4.8 With the exception of their opening field goal that came off an interception deep in Cincinnati's territory, the Cowboys? touchdown scores came on drives of 75, 80, 59, and 80, as Tony Romo?s offense had to work especially hard to score. Four different Cowboys scored touchdowns as Jason Garrett tried to keep all of the galacticos happy. 10. Minnesota Vikings: 4.5 The Vikings gave a clinic in New Orleans on how to get just 32 yards on 21 carries from your superstar, give up two punt returns for TD's and still win the game. All you have to do is have your backup running back throw a touchdown pass and have Antoine Winfield do just about everything else. 11. Miami Dolphins: 3.8 There is no mistaking that Ronnie Brown is the featured back once again in Miami, rushing 24 times for 125 yards (5.2 avg), but they will continue to put Ricky Williams on the field beside him in the Wildcat formation that has been so hugely successful. 12. Denver Broncos: 3.3 Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal combined for 48 yards, but Denver still managed to get into field goal range enough times for Matt Prater to sneak past the Buccaneers. 13. Arizona Cardinals: 3.3 Larry Fitzgerald and Edgerrin James made about as much as Steve Breaston and Tim Hightower will make all season on Sunday, but the contributions of the latter were just as valuable. 14. San Francisco 49ers: 2.7 The 49ers' defense stayed on the field way too long against New England as J.T. O?Sullivan ran back towards Mike Martz without getting a single first down seven times and five straight at one time. 15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 2.4 The Bucs averaged 6.3 yards per carry but had five three and outs. 16. Chicago Bears: 2.3 Typical Bears football on Sunday in Detroit: two TD's from Matt Forte, two field goals from Robbie Gould, a defensive TD from Charles Tillman.. and 334 yards with two touchdowns from Kyle 'Magnificent Mile' Orton. 17. Buffalo Bills: 1.4 The Bills are 7-2 when Marshawn Lynch rushes for 75 or more yards. He rushed for 55 against the Cardinals in Glendale. 18. San Diego Chargers: 1.3 The Chargers had just 10 first downs against Miami. For the season, their opponents are +29 in that category. 19. New York Jets: 0.1 The biggest piece of news coming out of the bye week in Jet-Land is Brett Favre putting wild turkeys in teammates' locker rooms. 20. New England Patriots: -1.1 Without the 66-yard Matt Cassel to Randy Moss touchdown pass in their third series, the Patriots would have gone three and out on their first three series and the entire complexion of the game and probably New England?s season would have been different. 21. Houston Texans: -2.5 The Texans dominated the Colts for about 52 minutes on Sunday. 22. New Orleans Saints: -4.1 - Martin Gramatica somehow kicks a 53-yarder to tie the game at 20 - A 2nd and 3 for the Vikings becomes a 2nd and 13 after two false starts - Gus Frerotte throws two incomplete passes on 2nd and 3rd downs - Reggie Bush returns his second punt of the game for a TD to give the Saints a 27-20 lead This looked like enough for the Saints to have a real signature win, but Berrian, Gramatica and Kaesviharn happened. 23. Green Bay Packers: -4.7 Unlike their losses to Dallas and Tampa Bay, Aaron Rodgers had a passer rating over 100, but like the 236 yards rushing against Barber/Jones and 178 against Graham/Dunn, Turner and five other Falcons combined for 176 against the Green Bay rush defense. 24. Jacksonville Jaguars: -5.3 Both Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew were each held to under 2.0 yards per carry (1.9 and 1.4 respectively). The Jags simply win when they can run the ball and lose when they can?t. 25. Indianapolis Colts: -6.3 The Colts really didn?t deserve to win that game in Houston on Sunday. They were outplayed in virtually every facet of the game and were down 17 points until Tom Santi of all people caught a TD to make it 27-17. But after two conservative runs by Ahman Green, Sage Rosenfels tried to scramble for the first and ended up fumbling it to Gary Brackett for a TD. Rosenfels fumbled the ball away again on 3rd and 9 as he was sacked, giving the Colts the ball at Houston?s 20. A Joseph Addai 15-yard run setup Reggie Wayne for the game-winning TD on the next play. 26. Oakland Raiders: -7.5 Another week, no game, still Tom Cable. 27. Seattle Seahawks: -7.7 It was all downhill after a nice 17-yard pass to Deion Branch on the first play from scrimmage of the game for Matt Hasselbeck and the Seahawks. Everything came back ok on Hasselbeck?s hyperextended knee, which is good news, but it will continue to bother him for the remainder of the season. I hyperextended my knee 10 years ago, and it still bothers me from time to time. Any kind of injury is exactly what a QB that has ratings of 53.9, 42.5, and 46.7 with a 104.6 outlier against the Rams doesn?t need. 28. Cleveland Browns: -8.5 Romeo Crennel, Derek Anderson, and Braylon Edwards had two weeks to prepare for the undefeated Giants. 29. Cincinnati Bengals: -8.9 I really didn?t see Cedric Benson?s 10 carries for 30 yards in his home state coming when they signed him. 30. Kansas City Chiefs: -9.5 The Chiefs allowed almost as many yards on one play to DeAngelo (32) as their own entire rushing game could muster in 17 attempts (35). 31. Detroit Lions: -14.4 Since his six catch, 129 yard, two TD day against the Packers in Week 2, Calvin Johnson has caught just six balls for 56 yards. 32. St. Louis Rams: -15.0 Even with the bye and coaching change, the Rams will have a difficult time getting their first win of 2008 at red hot Washington.

RealGM's Week Five NFL Rundown

Sep 14, 2014 7:52 AM

Chances are you saw a majority of the thirteen games played on Sunday in the NFL?s Week Five, but there is no need to worry if you weren?t watching all the action. RealGM is here to help summarize all that went down as NFL teams took the field in the first weekend of October. We will also showcase each game's top FIC* (field impact counter) performers using RealGM editor Chris Reina's innovative statistical system and calculate each team?s Trench Counter**. Washington 23, Philadelphia 17 Team Trench Counter: Redskins +6.5, Eagles -6.5 The Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) jumped out to a very quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Washington Redskins (4-1) had the last laugh on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. Brian Westbrook scored on a 9-yard run on Philadelphia?s first possession, and then DeSean Jackson returned a punt 68 yards after a three-and-out on Washington?s first drive. The Redskins hung around, thanks to spotless defense and three field goals through the remainder of the first half, and remained hot in the third and fourth quarters. Washington took a 16-14 lead on an 18-yard pass by Antwaan Randle El to tight end Chris Cooley and put the game away on a 4-yard touchdown run by Clinton Portis in the fourth. David Akers kicked a field goal midway through the quarter to pull the Eagles to within a score, but for the second-straight week they couldn?t reach the end zone late. Donovan McNabb, 17-for-29 with 196 yards, and Jason Campbell, 16-for-29 with 176 yards, were nearly identical, but the latter was able to come away with the victory. Brian Westbrook, who started but missed time with a chest injury, has 86 total yards while Portis burned Philadelphia?s usually stout rush defense for 145 yards. Neither team committed a turnover. Game FIC Scores - Jason Campbell, WAS: 15 - Donovan McNab, PHI: 18 - Clinton Portis, WAS: 57 - Brian Westbrook, PHI: 41 - Reggie Brown, PHI: 46 - Chris Cooley, WAS: 68 N.Y. Giants 44, Seattle 6 Team Trench Counter: Giants +26.4, Seahawks -26.4 The New York Giants (4-0) looked even better without Plaxico Burress on Sunday than they did in the first three games of the season with the elite receiver. The Giants drubbed the Seahawks (1-3) in East Rutherford thanks to the tremendous play of both Eli Manning and running back Brandon Jacobs. Manning went 19-for-25 with 267 yards and a pair of touchdown, with backup David Carr going 1-for-1 with 5 yards and a touchdown in garbage time near the end of the game. Jacobs rushed fifteen times for 136 yards and two scores in the victory. Matt Hasselbeck continued to struggle, going 11-for-21 with 105 yards and an interception, as the Seattle offense had a very difficult time moving against New York. Receiver Deion Branch made his season debut for the team, grabbing three passes for 31 yards, but had to leave in the second half with an injury to his foot. Julius Jones rushed for 61 yards on seventeen carries for the Seahawks, who went 1-for-11 on third down. Giants' receivers Domenik Hixon, four catches for 102 yards and a touchdown, and Sinorice Moss, four catches for 45 yards and two scores, played terrific in the absence of the suspended Burress. Game FIC Scores - Eli Manning, NYG: 35 - Matt Hasselbeck, SEA: 6 - Brandon Jacosbs, NYG: 69 - Julius Jones, SEA: 21 - Derrick Ward, NYG: 20 - Domenik Hixon, NYG: 60 - Bobby Engram, SEA: 39 - Sinorice Moss, NYG: 37 - Amani Toomer, NYG: 36 Miami 17, San Diego 10 Team Trench Counter: Dolphins +15.3, Chargers -15.3 The Miami Dolphins (2-2) have already won more games than they did in the entire 2007 season after they defeated the San Diego Chargers (2-3) at home on Sunday. Chad Pennington managed a terrific game, going 22-for-29 with 228 yards and a touchdown, while Ronnie Brown had 125 yards and a score of his own on the ground. Brown scored on a 5-yard run on a direct snap in the second quarter, the team?s new go-to play, giving Miami a 17-3 lead. The Dolphins? defense didn?t force any turnovers, but they sacked Philip Rivers twice and held LaDainian Tomlinson in check. Rivers went 13-for-28 with 159 yards and a touchdown while Tomlinson ran for just 35 yards on twelve attempts. Rivers connected with former-Dolphins receiver Chris Chambers for a 17-yard score in the third quarter, but San Diego wasn?t able to score again as Miami held on for their second-straight victory. Greg Camarillo was the game?s leading receiver with six catches for 68 yards, including a 17-yard strike from Pennington that gave the Dolphins the lead in the second quarter. Game FIC Scores - Chad Pennington, MIA: 26 - Philip Rivers, SD: 14 - Ronnie Brown, MIA: 49 - LaDainian Tomlinson, SD: 22 - Ted Ginn Jr, MIA: 35 - Vincent Jackson, SD: 30 - Anthony Fasano, MIA: 27 - Antonio Gates, SD: 7 Indianapolis 31, Houston 27 Team Trench Counter: Texans +3.1, Colts -3.1 The Indianapolis Colts (2-2) stormed back with seventeen points in the final four minutes as they knocked off the Houston Texans (0-4) at Reliant Stadium. Sage Rosenfels, who started in place of ill quarterback Matt Schaub, went 21-for-33 with 246 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in the loss while rookie running back Steve Slaton tore up the Colts? defense for 93 yards and two trips to the end zone. Andre Johnson, Rosenfels? top target, caught nine passes for 131 yards and a score as Houston took a 27-10 lead into the final five minutes of the game. Peyton Manning, who looked confused in the first half, finished the game with 247 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception on 25-for-34 passing in the comeback win. Joseph Addai had 71 rushing yards and a score, but it was the defense that got Indianapolis back in the game with the clock seemingly against them. After Manning hooked up with Tom Santi in the end zone with 4:04 left, linebacker Gary Brackett forced a fumble by Rosenfels and returned it 68 yards for a quick score. Three plays later, Robert Mathis forced another fumble, which set up a quick connection between Manning and Reggie Wayne to give the Colts a 31-27 win. Game FIC Scores - Peyton Manning, IND: 31 - Sage Rosenfels, HOU: 27 - Steve Slaton, HOU: 43 - Joseph Addai, IND: 26 - Andre Johnson, HOU: 80 - Reggie Wayne, IND: 61 - Dallas Clark, IND: 46 - Owen Daniels, HOU: 29 Atlanta 27, Green Bay 24 Team Trench Counter: Falcons +8.1, Packers -8.1 Aaron Rodgers? shoulder didn?t seem to bother him, but a late interception cost the Green Bay Packers (2-3) against the Atlanta Falcons (3-2). Rodgers went 25-for-37 with 313 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception while rookie Matt Ryan went 16-for-26 with 194 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception of his own. With the Packers trailing 20-17 midway through the fourth, Rodgers was picked off in Green Bay territory. Michael Turner, who had 121 yards on twenty-six carries, scored on a 2-yard run after the interception to give Atlanta a two-possession lead with 3:35 left in the game. Rodgers led the offense down the field quickly, going 72 yards for a touchdown in 1:39, to trim the Falcons? lead to just three points, but the Packers couldn?t recover an attempted onside kick. Turner then ran on three-straight plays, earning a first down, and Ryan kneeled twice to end the game. Game FIC Scores - Aaron Rodgers, GB: 41 - Matt Ryan, ATL: 29 - Michael Turner, ATL: 40 - Ryan Grant, GB: 24 - Roddy White, ATL: 79 - Greg Jennings, GB: 53 Chicago 34, Detroit 7 Team Trench Counter: Bears +16.4, Lions -16.4 The Chicago Bears (3-2) routed the Detroit Lions (0-4) on Sunday at Ford Field, thanks to tremendous play by their defense and quarterback Kyle Orton. The Chicago defense had four sacks, one interception, and a forced fumble against Detroit while limiting the Lions to just 185 yards of total offense. Orton went 24-for-34 with 334 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Devin Hester and Matt Forte for the scores. Forte, who had 61 total yards, added a rushing touchdown in the victory. Rookie running back Kevin Smith was the lone star for the Lions, with 56 total yards and the team?s only touchdown. Jon Kitna was 8-for-16 with 74 yards before he was forced out of the game with back spasms at halftime. He was replaced by Dan Orlovsky, who went 13-for-23 with 97 yards and an interception while leading the Lions on their only scoring drive near the end of the third quarter. The Bears did, however, intercept Orlovsky on his second pass attempt, with Charles Tillman bringing the ball all the way back for a 26-yard score. Game FIC Scores - Kyle Orton, CHI: 45 - Dan Orlovsky, DET: 6 - Jon Kitna, DET: 1 - Matt Forte, CHI: 30 - Kevin Smith, DET: 29 - Roy Williams, DET: 55 - Rashied Davis, CHI: 55 - Calvin Johnson, DET: 10 Carolina 34, Kansas City 0 Team Trench Counter: Panthers +26.2, Chiefs -26.2 The Carolina Panthers (4-1) soundly defeated the Kansas City Chiefs (1-4) on Sunday after dominating in all facets of the game. Jake Delhomme went 14-for-22 with 236 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception while DeAngelo Williams ran for 123 yards and a pair of scores. Williams also caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Delhomme in the second quarter. Carolina?s defense notched three sacks, two interceptions, and a pair of forced fumbles, as they held Kansas City to just 127 total yards. Damon Huard went 10-for-21 with just 86 yards and two interceptions while Tyler Thigpen went 5-for-10 with 37 yards in the fourth quarter. Larry Johnson had just two yards on seven carries, and the Chiefs managed just 25 total rushing yards on seventeen attempts. Dwayne Bowe caught five passes for 57 yards, and tight end Tony Gonzalez made history, becoming the NFL?s all-time leader in receiving yards by a tight end with 10,075 for his career. Game FIC Scores - Jake Delhomme, CAR: 30 - Damon Huard, KC: -1 - DeAngelo Williams, CAR: 70 - Larry Johnson, KC: -6 - Steve Smith, CAR: 54 - Dwayne Bowe, KC: 34 Tennessee 13, Baltimore 10 Team Trench Counter: Titans -6.7, Ravens +6.7 The Tennessee Titans (5-0) stormed back in the fourth quarter to knock off the Baltimore Ravens (2-2) and keep their perfect record intact. Kerry Collins went 17-for-32 with163 yards and two interceptions, and a timely touchdown strike to Alge Crumpler with 1:56 left in the game that gave the Titans the three-point win. The Ravens kept Tennessee?s ground game in check, holding Chris Johnson and LenDale White to just 48 combined yards as defense dominated the game. Rookie Joe Flacco went 18-for-27 with 153 yards and two interceptions while Willis McGahee (64 yards) and Le?Ron McClain (51 yards and a touchdown) moved the ball well on the ground. The two teams combined for 316 total yards in the game, less than a good number of teams did themselves in Week Five. Each team punted four times, with Matt Stover?s missed 45-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter weighing heavily in the outcome of the game. Game FIC Scores - Kerry Collins, TEN: 14 - Joe Flacco, BAL: 13 - Le'Ron McClain, BAL: 28 - Chris Johnson, TEN: 8 Denver 16, Tampa Bay 13 Team Trench Counter: Broncos -2.9, Buccaneers +2.9 The Denver Broncos (4-1) held on for a big win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2) at Invesco Field on Sunday afternoon. Jay Cutler wasn?t terrific, but he did enough, going 23-for-34 with 227 yards and a touchdown, to help lead the Broncos to victory. Michael Pittman and Selvin Young combined for 77 rushing yards while Brandon Stokley led Denver with six catches for 52 yards and a score in their three-point win over the defensively-oriented Buccaneers. Brian Griese, who went 13-for-19 with 88 yards, was replaced by Jeff Garcia after injuring his arm. Garcia went 13-for-17 with 93 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in the close loss. Griese replaced Garcia as the starter after the team?s season-opener, and it was rumored that Tampa Bay was looking to rid themselves of Garcia soon after. Warrick Dunn and Earnest Graham tallied 133 yards on the ground, but the Bucs ran out of time as the Broncos got the ball with less than two minutes left and recorded a pair of first downs to preserve their lead. Game FIC Scores - Jay Cutler, DEN: 30 - Jeff Garcia, TB: 16 - Brian Griese, TB: 6 - Warrick Dunn, TB: 36 - Earnest Graham, TB: 35 - Michael Pittman, DEN: 27 - Brandon Stokley, DEN: 37 - Brandon Marshall, DEN: 16 - Tony Scheffler, DEN: 37 New England 30, San Francisco 21 Team Trench Counter: Patriots +11.3, 49ers -11.3 The New England Patriots (3-1) erased the memory of their embarrassing loss to the Dolphins in Week Three, thanks to a close win over the San Francisco 49ers (2-3) at Candlestick Park. Matt Cassel went 22-for-32 with 259 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, probably not enough to prove that he?s the man over rookie Kevin O?Connell with rumors swirling that the Patriots are close to making a quarterback change. Luckily for Cassel, New England ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns, both by Kevin Faulk, and the defense kept the 49ers from exploding. J.T O?Sullivan went 14-for-29 with 130 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Frank Gore had 78 total yards and a receiving touchdown while Isaac Bruce caught three passes for 49 yards and a pair of scores. San Francisco sacked Cassel five times but couldn?t keep the Patriots from gaining yards on the ground. Both teams scored three touchdowns, but the difference was the three field goals kicked by Stephen Gostkowski as New England scored on six of their twelve drives. Game FIC Scores - J.T. O'Sullivan, SF: 23 - Matt Cassel, NE: 22 - Frank Gore, SF: 36 - Kevin Faulk, NE: 38 - Randy Moss, NE: 66 - Isaac Bruce, SF: 38 Dallas 31, Cincinnati 22 Team Trench Counter: Cowboys +8.8, Bengals -8.8 The Dallas Cowboys (4-1) won a surprisingly close game over the Cincinnati Bengals (0-5) on Sunday at Texas Stadium. Tony Romo went 14-for-23 with 176 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception while Carson Palmer went 23-for-39 with 217 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception of his own. The difference was on the ground as Felix Jones and Marion Barber combined for 180 yards and a touchdown in the victory. The Bengals managed just 61 yards, between Chris Perry and the recently-signed Cedric Benson, in the game. Palmer hooked up with T.J. Houshmandzadeh midway through the fourth quarter for their second touchdown of the game, bringing the Bengals to without two points of the Cowboys after a failed two-point conversion. On their next possession, Dallas converted twice on third down leading to a 15-yard touchdown pass from Romo to Patrick Crayton that gave the Cowboys a 31-22 lead with less than two minutes remaining. Game FIC Scores - Tony Romo, DAL: 25 - Carson Palmer, CIN: 24 - Felix Jones, DAL: 49 - Marion Barber, DAL: 25 - Terrell Owens, DAL: 41 - TJ Houshmandzadeh, CIN: 60 - Jason Witten, DAL: 53 Arizona 41, Buffalo 17 Team Trench Counter: Cardinals +11.5, Bills -11.5 The Arizona Cardinals (3-2) handed the Buffalo Bills (4-1) their first loss of the season on Sunday after quarterback Trent Edwards went out with a concussion early in the first quarter. J.P. Losman replaced Edwards and played well, but the Buffalo defense was poor for the first time this season. Kurt Warner went 33-for-42 with 250 yards and two touchdowns in the victory while Losman went 15-for-21 with 220 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in the loss. Arizona?s defense was feisty on Sunday, recording five sacks, grabbing an interception and collecting three fumbles. Edgerrin James and Tim Hightower, taking advantage of good field position, combined for 94 yards and three touchdowns against Buffalo?s usually stifling defense. The win gives the Cardinals sole possession of first place in the NFC West while the loss has trimmed Buffalo?s lead in the AFC East to just a half-game. AS the Bills will enjoy a bye in Week Six, they hope Edwards is healthy enough to face San Diego in two weeks. Game FIC Scores - Kurt Warner, ARI: 40 - JP Losman, BUF: 23 - Trent Edwards, BUF: 3 - Tim Hightower, ARI: 28 - Edgerrin James, ARI: 23 - Fred Jackson, BUF: 21 - Marshawn Lynch, BUF: 23 - Steve Breaston, ARI: 46 - Larry Fitzgerald, ARI: 43 - Lee Evans, BUF: 57 Pittsburgh 26, Jacksonville 21 Team Trench Counter: Steelers +9.5, Jaguars -9.5 Despite falling behind early, the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-1) gritted out a tough win over the rival Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) on Sunday night. Rashean Mathis intercepted Ben Roethlisberger on the first drive of the game, returning the ball 72 yards for a touchdown, but Pittsburgh hung tough and received an unexpected boost from running back Mewelde Moore. Moore rushed for 99 yards with several of Pittsburgh?s running backs out with injuries, and Roethlisberger finished the game 26-for-41 with 309 yards, three touchdowns, and the aforementioned interception. David Garrard went 18-for-32 with 200 yards and a touchdown for the Jaguars, but the Steelers limited Jacksonville to just 38 rushing yards on nineteen attempts. Maurice Jones-Drew gave the Jaguars a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter, but the Steelers answered with thirteen points in the second quarter to take a lead into the half. After a scoreless third, Garrard hooked up with Marcedes Lewis for a 24-yard touchdown that gave Jacksonville a 21-20 edge. However, Roethlisberger found Hines Ward for an 8-yard score with 1:53 left in the game to give the Steelers the victory. Game FIC Scores - Ben Roethlisberger, PIT: 37 - David Garrard, JAC: 21 - Mewelde Moore, PIT: 44 - Maurice Jones-Drew, JAC: 21 - Hines Ward, PIT: 57 - Santonio Holmes, PIT: 37 - Heath Miller, PIT: 33 Minnesota 30, New Orleans 27 Team Trench Counter: Vikings +9.9, Saints -9.9 It took a field goal by Ryan Longwell in the final minute, but the Minnesota Vikings (2-3) defeated the New Orleans Saints (2-3) in Louisiana on Monday night. Gus Frerotte went 19-for-36 with 222 yards and a touchdown, while running back Chester Taylor threw a 4-yard touchdown of his own in the victory. The New Orleans defense held Adrian Peterson in check, limiting him to 32 yards on twenty-one carries. Drew Brees went 26-for-46 with 330 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss. Reggie Bush had 93 total yards, and returned an NFL-record two punts for touchdowns for the Saints. Brees gave New Orleans an early lead with a touchdown strike to Devery Henderson, but Antoine Winfield blocked a field goal and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown five minutes later to tie the score. Minnesota took a 20-10 lead into the half, but Bush came to the rescue in the third. He returned a punt 71 yards with 1:46 left in the third and book ended a Martin Gramatica field goal with another touchdown return midway through the fourth. Frerotte answered on the next possession, throwing a 33-yard touchdown to Bernard Berrian to tie the game after missing a play following a rough hit in the backfield. After Gramatica missed a potential game-winning field goal from 46 yards out with 2:04 left on the clock, the Vikings quickly got into field goal range after a 42-yard pass interference call that brought them down to the Saints' fourteen yard line. *The NFL Reina Value **Explaining The Trench Counter
